The Deadwood Stage was written for the 1953 film Calamity Jane, in which Doris Day had the staring role.
The song was written by Sammy Fain and Paul Francis Webster.
The song is the opening song of the musical, and often familiar by the opening line I just flew in from the windy city. The lyrics go on to discuss the “beautiful sky”, “a-rollin’ on over the plains”, and “wonderful day”. The song also includes “Whip crack-away!” which is also found in the title of the song at times. The lines go on to discuss Wild Bill Hickok, who was played by Howard Keel in the film version.
The song was featured in Doris Day‘s greatest hits album, A Sentimental Journey.
In 2003, a London stage show of the musical was performed.
Clint Walker and Melinda Schneider have also recorded the song.
