Hail! Minnesota

Hail! Minnesota is the state song for Minnesota.

Minneapolis, Minnesota

The song was first composed by Truman Rickard in 1904. It originated as a song for the graduating class at the University of Minnesota and was performed for the first time on May 28, 1904.

The second verse honored the school’s president, Cyrus Northrop, who preferred the song reflect the school and state spirit. Campus newspaperman, Arthur Upson, wrote a new second verse.

The University of Minnesota Marching Band sings the song at the end of every practice and performance, so Golden Gopher football fans who stay for the band’s post-game performance can hear the song.

In 1945, the Minnesota State Legislature adopted the song for their state song.
